There has been a sudden increase in the selling price of Onion in the Indian market, all over the country. India, being a market that consumes a huge amount of Onions, is seeing the selling price skyrocket due to a reduction in yield. The major cause of this increase in prices is the reduction in supply, to meet the huge demand. And the reason for this drop in supply is due to a huge drop in yield, especially in central and southern India. The current rise in onion prices is a result of last year’s drought and a delayed monsoon this year. The situation is compounded by excessive rainfall in onion-growing areas, which has delayed the harvest period by a week or so.
Reasons behind Price Rise
One of the major reasons for this drop in yield is the excessive rain destroying the crop. Because of the compaction of the soil, the rainwater is not able to go down/drain, but get stagnated on the surface, leading to the wilting of the plant and loss of yield. The main cause for the soil being so compact and non-porous is the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers are being used for farming at a very large quantity. The use of these chemical fertilizers has brought the farming community to a situation where the soil becomes very hard and dense due to the salt deposition in the soil, leading to the dropping of germination percentage and plant survival. This results in a drastic drop in yield.
The use of a huge amount of chemical fertilizer increases the input costs, but the drop in yield is causing a drastic increase in prices for the farmer to earn some profit/breakeven.
